Plans to build a new $1.6 million community hub for Dimboola has been reduced to meet funding shortfall, after federal government grant funding fell through.

Hindmarsh Shire Council last week approved the 2017/18 budget, including to proceed with the Dimboola Community Hub, that will somewhat be smaller than the original design.

Council had set aside $200,000 in the budget and were successful in a state government grant of $500,000 from the ‘Building Better Library’ grants.  The shortfall comes after the council failed to secure federal funding for the project.  The new plans are now to build the community hub with a $700,000 budget, with a new plan that will allow for the project to be extended, as future funding becomes available.

The new Dimboola ‘Community Hub’ is proposed to be built behind the Old Shire Offices.

Former Hindmarsh Shire Councillor Wendy Robins asked council to consider using the $200,000 put aside in the budget for another project.  This was rejected as council would need to to give back the $500,00 from the state government. Ms Robins also suggested that a fund raiser should be established for Dimboola to raise money for the Hub.

“This will see how much Dimboola wants this hub,” said Ms Robins.

“They can buy bricks with their name on it, like we did to raise funds for the Early Learning Centre in Nhill,” she said.
