Hindmarsh Shire's Young Citizen of the Year Award has been given to 11-year-old Chelsea Elliot from Dimboola.

Chelsea took the initiative to contact Hindmarsh Shire Council to ask if she could run a Christmas Tree Giving Appeal in the Dimboola Library, which soon spread to all libraries across the shire.

Her efforts last Christmas saw 190 gifts donated throughout the shire, and Chelsea personally delivered some to the Salvation Army in Horsham.

Chelsea has run fundraising events with the aim of helping people less fortunate than her.

"I love organising and helping people," Chelsea said.

When asked how she felt about receiving the award, she said "good".

Chelsea has already signed herself up for the Starlight Foundation's Super Swim where she will swim 100 laps, totalling five kilometres, in February as a fundraiser.

This year Chelsea will repeat the Christmas Tree Giving Appeal, for which she said she would start collecting gifts in November, allowing extra time for their delivery.

She will also continue running St Peter's Lutheran School Dimboola's fundraising group where she raises money for charities such as Phoenix Animal Rescue Horsham and the Good Friday Appeal.
