Yarriambiack Shire Council has released their draft Resource Recovery and Waste Management Strategy that looks into their three-year plan to reduce waste, increase recycling and encourage innovative recycling forms. The report was built around 15 survey responses that the council received on a previous survey, separate from the recent purple bin survey, about their thoughts on recycling in the area.Eleven main issues were raised by the surveyors including food and garden waste service, hard rubbish collection problems for those without trailers and transfer station opening hours. The option for a Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) green bin was a popular request as many citizens enjoy gardening and have an excess of green waste. However, it is uncertain when this will be explored by the council as their main challenge for the bin would be the discovery of cost-efficient disposal methods of the waste.Hard rubbish, which "is always popular with people", has been identified as a problem for those without trailer access.Council is looking into the possible solution of an 'at call' service or annual service. However, the service can be expensive and result in untidy streets leading up to pick-up times.Over the next three years, the council will be reviewing options for mobile “problematic” waste collection points. The transfer station opening times were raised as an issue. Council is seeking to do a complete review of all Yarriambiack transfer station requirements over the next 10 years. This will also tie in with their plans for complete transfer station site works to improve access and drop-off areas. The report acknowledges that the shire is "not performing relatively well" in its kerbside bin contamination levels. The council have set a target for 2022-26 to reduce this contamination, currently at more than 20 percent, to less than 10 percent.Their strategy to achieve this involves online promotion, establishing rubbish guidelines and undertaking regular bin audits to assess the contamination levels.
