Summer searches climb a temperatures climb

The Wimmera’s cold, wet winters and hot, dry summers are perfect conditions for crop production; however, for the humble recreational garden enthusiast, the dreams of thriving vegetable harvests and luscious gardens are a difficult feat.

Google Trends data reveals that over the past five years, searches for “drip irrigation” have risen with the seasons, typically peaking in the warmer months and backing off during the cooler season.

It peaked in early 2026, as the region experienced consistently higher-than-average temperatures over the summer.

“What is drip irrigation” also skyrocketed unprecedentedly around the same time, after interest in the search term had remained relatively low over the five years before this.

The search term “gardening tips” also rose early this year, following the same pattern as “drip irrigation” and “what is drip irrigation.”

Perhaps coinciding with the interest in garden-related searches peaking early this year was the 2026 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in March.

The show celebrates gardens, flowers, design, and creativity at the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens.

It inspires garden installations, floral displays, and designs.

Interest remains low and fluctuates slightly for “vegetable gardening,” although according to the Australian Institute, 48% of Victorians grow their own food.

The Warracknabeal Community Garden, located in the heart of Warracknabeal, provides an immersive space of colour and nature for the community to connect with.

It offers something for everyone, not just gardeners, but also a memorable experience for visitors passing through town.

“Drought tolerant plants” has attracted little attention over the past five years, with small peaks in searches, as the region has experienced high annual rainfall.
