The 1st Rainbow Scouts and Cubs leapt into the new year with great gusto and enjoyed their first adventure for 2024 - canoeing at Rainbow Lake.

Taking the lead were Jasper, Edison and Adalyn, who travelled to Warracknabeal and joined in with the 1st Warracknabeal’s canoeing activity at the end of last year.

Jasper, Edison and Adalyn were able to demonstrate to their peers how to safely get in and out of the two-person canoes, how to manoeuvre them forwards, backwards and sideways, and how to “raft up” - hold the three canoes together in a line so they could move safely between them.

Life vests were worn by everyone, and the importance of being safe when near water was discussed.

Unit leader Claire “Akela” Roll said it was a great way to start the year.

“The parents cooked an amazing barbecue afterwards, and we finished the evening with badge presentations,” she said.

“We also welcomed new Cubs’ leader Jess Hollamby and two new Cubs - Hayden and Xavier.

Ms Roll said she was sorry to see two of her Cubs go, as Tyler and Edison graduated to Scouts.

“I was sorry to see them go but l know they have some amazing opportunities ahead of them,” she said.

“I know they had a tear in their eye when they said goodbye to Akela, and a big grin as they headed out.

Last weekend, an event at the Horsham Showgrounds saw more than 180 Scouts and their Leaders from 15 Units across the Wimmera District, Ballarat District and Geelong Region gather together to highlight the range of skills and activities on offer.

The event also served to help prepare the Scouts for next year’s Australian Jamboree in Maryborough, Queensland, which involves 10 days of camping, activities and entertainment.

“And our Cubs are busy getting ready for next term’s regional camp at Lake Fyans,” Ms Roll said.
