Weir taking CrossFit by storm
Lilly Weir is a talented netballer who plays for Taylors Lake in the Horsham District Football Netball League. She won the A-Grade and 17-and-under best and fairest for the Lakers and was runner-up in the league best and fairest in the 17-and-under, but her CrossFit journey is making waves.
The teenager has been in the CrossFit game for over a year and has already won a competition, the Expo Games in Melbourne, in April.
Her most significant feat was coming second in the Torian Pro in Brisbane in May. Although she competed with athletes throughout Oceania, only ten athletes from her age group, 16-17, were invited, which is a massive feat.
There were various timed events, from 800-meter runs to 10 clean and jerks, legless rope climbs, and box jump-overs, to name a few.
Weir was thrilled with her accomplishment, considering she didn't know what CrossFit was not long ago.
"Once I discovered it, I loved it ever since, and from not knowing what it was to achieving what I have in a short amount of time, it is really good," Weir said.
"To come second and be the second fittest teenager in the Oceania region is pretty special."
Weir recalled how she got involved in CrossFit and spoke about her training regime.
"I rode past HCF Crossfit one day on my bike and saw there was an open day, so I went back there, tried it, and they said I had potential, so I kept going back and have done it ever since," Weir said.
"I train every day, am there in the morning and afternoon, and try to get in as much as possible. I try to get the volume in because that's what everyone else is doing, competing with each other, and I love making myself better and working towards goals.
"My typical training week involves afternoon training with coaches. Depending on the day and what I have to do, I attend a class and maybe do a few extras."
"Now, without netball, I can train on weekends, and I love training. I will have an active rest day on a Thursday, train every other day and maybe have a Sunday off."
"It also depends on what I have time for as school can get in the way too, and I am lucky I have a lot of people helping me out and taking me to places to be able to do this."
Weir loves the CrossFit community, describing it as a 'good supportive community'.
"The community is great, and the way they push you to improve is excellent," Weir said.
"You are not going to be the best person at everything, and not everyone is good at one thing, so you have to be good at everything to be at the top. "
Regarding her netball feats this year, Weir is happy and excited to see where her sporting journey will take her in the coming years.
"Considering I missed a few games due to CrossFit, to achieve what I did in netball was pretty good," Weir said.
"I have played netball my whole life, and I love CrossFit, so as I don't have juniors next year, I will just play A-grade and do CrossFit as CrossFit is becoming one of my favourites."
